FUE vs FUT: Pros, Cons, and Scarring
FUE extracts follicles one by one — no linear scar, faster healing, and you can wear your
hair short. FUT removes a strip of scalp — it can yield many grafts at once but leaves a thin
linear scar. Most modern patients choose FUE; FUT is occasionally considered for very large cases.
Two techniques dominate hair restoration: FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT
(Follicular Unit Transplantation, the "strip" method). They reach the same goal differently.
How each works
- FUE: individual follicular units are harvested directly from the donor zone with a micro-punch
and implanted. See our FUE page. - FUT: a strip of skin is removed from the back of the scalp, dissected into grafts under
magnification, and the donor site is stitched closed.
Scarring: the big difference
- FUE leaves tiny dot scars scattered across the donor area — virtually invisible, even with
short hair. - FUT leaves a single thin linear scar where the strip was taken. It’s usually hidden by
surrounding hair, but can show if you shave the back very short.
Pros and cons
| | FUE | FUT |
| — | — | — |
| Scar | Tiny dots | Linear scar |
| Short haircuts | Fine | May reveal scar |
| Healing | Faster | Longer (stitches) |
| Grafts per session | High | Very high |
| Comfort | No stitches | Stitches/staples |
Who each suits
- FUE suits most people — especially those who want to keep their hair short, return to life
quickly, and avoid a linear scar. - FUT is occasionally considered when a very large number of grafts is needed and the donor
strip can provide them in one go.
