How Many Grafts Do You Need? A Simple Guide
Graft count depends on the area and your degree of hair loss. As a rough guide: hairline
1,500–2,500, front third 2,000–3,000, crown or larger areas 3,000–4,000+. Your exact
number — and whether it fits your donor supply — is confirmed at an in-person assessment.
Graft count is the number that decides two things at once: how natural and full your result looks,
and how much it costs. So it’s worth understanding how it’s estimated.
What is a graft?
A graft is a naturally occurring follicular unit — a small group of 1 to 4 hairs. Surgeons
think in grafts, not individual hairs, because that’s how hair grows and how it’s transplanted.
Rough graft guide by area
These are general ranges only — your assessment may differ:
| Area | Typical graft range |
| — | — |
| Hairline / temples | 1,500 – 2,500 |
| Front third | 2,000 – 3,000 |
| Mid-scalp | 1,500 – 2,500 |
| Crown / vertex | 2,000 – 3,000+ |
| Beard | 1,000 – 2,500 |
| Eyebrows | 400 – 800 |
Combining areas increases the total. You can play with combinations in our
cost and graft estimator.
What affects your estimate
- Degree of loss (often described by the Norwood scale for men).
- Desired density — a denser look needs more grafts.
- Donor supply — the back and sides must have enough healthy, permanent follicles.
- Hair characteristics — thickness, curl and colour contrast with skin all affect how full a
given number of grafts looks.

Why "more" isn’t always better
Good planning protects your donor area. Harvesting too aggressively to chase a very high number
can thin the donor zone permanently. An experienced surgeon balances coverage today with preserving
grafts for the future — especially if hair loss is ongoing.
The takeaway
Use the ranges above to set expectations, but remember the only accurate number comes from an
in-person look at your scalp and donor area. If you’d like that, our teams in
